MELBOURNE: There aren’t too many things more exciting for country kids than coming to Melbourne in the school holidays. Add in a Disney musical, a fantastic family-friendly hotel, some delicious food, and you’ve got the makings of a legendary few days away.
Frozen the Musical
One great reason to visit Melbourne with your kids in tow is to watch Frozen the musical in Australia’s theatre capital. It’s a little luxury after life in lockdown and perfect for little girls who are convinced they’re going to grow up to be Snow Queens, and for cool kids who love their show tunes.
Frozen is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from now until mid-October. If you’re heading to town, be sure to check the website for details as the show has been, well, on ice, for the last few weeks due to the recent lockdown… but, with restrictions lifting today, we’re sure to see it thaw and resume.
A family-friendly Stay in Southbank
If you’re heading to Melbourne with kids in tow, consider staying in a generously proportioned two-bedroom apartment at the brand-new Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne Southbank. An apartment with two single beds, a king-size bed, two bathrooms (the king bedroom has an ensuite with a bath), a huge, curved lounge/dining room overlooking the city and ample kitchen means you won’t all be on top of each other after a day spent exploring.
Insider Tip: The hotel’s heated indoor pool provides the perfect panacea to the cooler weather outside and is sure to make a splash.
A Little Extra Chill Time
The Adina is only a block or so back from Southgate and the Yarra River, and the easy walk into the city each day is picturesque at this time of year.
In keeping with the Frozen theme, consider visiting treating the kids to a meal in an Igloo. This winter, the Wharf Hotel is offering cosy igloo dining experience for those who are looking for a night under fairy lights on the banks of the Yarra. Think of it as your own winter wonderland with stunning water views. The activation runs until September.
The cold weather never bothered Elsa, but if you want a little shelter from Melbourne’s wintery weather, head to the O’Brien Icehouse (an easy walk from your hotel) for some chill time with the fam. Whether you’re a size 2 or a size 18 skate, these guys with get you up and skating in a matter of moments…. and remember, the thrills and spills are all part of the fun.
For an extra dose of Disney, the new ACMI Disney exhibition comes highly recommended. This exhibition features more than 500 exceptional artworks including original paintings, sketches and concept art Including pieces from Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019). These rarely seen works reveal the development of beloved stories and animation techniques from your favourite Walt Disney Animation Studios films and promises fun for the whole family. And... perhaps best of all... ACMI is inviting Frozen Fans to sing along!
With four seasons in one day, any visit to Melbourne is great... but we all but guarantee our Frozen-inspired itinerary will help chase away any winter blues.
