Full of beautiful parks, reserves and waterways and now catching up to the city’s inner suburbs in terms of great coffee and delicious dining, Sydney’s Hills District is the perfect destination for those looking to unwind, explore and indulge.
Norwest Lake provides the perfect example of the easy tranquillity of the region. Surrounded by walking trails and cycle ways and offering plenty of picnic spots, this is where the locals come to enjoy the sun and get active, many family groups passing the time by feeding the lake’s friendly ducks.
The shore of the lake is also home to a number of cafes and restaurants, including the family-owned Il Lago. Head chef Steven Yeomans has many years’ experience working in Sydney’s top hatted restaurants and has created a mouth-watering menu full of authentic Italian dishes with high end flair, such as the black tagliolini with braised octopus, carrot and orange puree. Possibly the hardest decision you’ll face here, as you sit overlooking the lake, is deciding between the fried apple and cinnamon ravioli or the incredible cheese selection for dessert. We say go for both: you only live once.
If you’re after a lighter meal, head to Twenty-two Café Bar and Grill downstairs at the Adina. The first thing you’ll notice will no doubt be the three bikes mounted on the wall above the counter. The good news is the menu is as interesting as the décor, with plates such as champagne poached chicken and French toast with poached pear, chai anglaise and maple syrup to tempt your tastebuds. The coffee is also great if you’re chasing a mid-afternoon pick me up. Décor with a difference at Twenty-two Café Bar and Grill Across town you’ll find the Roxborough Park Rose Garden, where there are more than 100 varieties of roses planting beautifully over 8000 square metres. The mix of colours, fragrances and intricate garden designs are enough to leave anyone in awe, making it a great spot for a stroll and your next Instagram post.
For something different during your stay, head to the Sydney Ice Arena. As well as standard ice-skating, the arena offers figure skating lessons, disco sessions and the chance to watch Australia’s top ice-hockey players in action. It’s the perfect place to cool down during the summer months as well as an excellent option for a rainy day.
