Make the Most of Spring in Perth

Lovely sunny days, warmer ocean temperatures and a plethora of outdoor dining options make Perth an ideal choice for spring getaways. Pack your beach gear, download a summery playlist and get ready to enjoy Australia’s west coast at its best.

One of the biggest drawcards of Perth is the bright blue Indian Ocean which laps against the coast on the city’s western edge. Make the most of it and learn to surf at Scarborough Beach Surf School, try your hand at kiteboarding, jump aboard akayakto get up close and personal with sea lions and fairy penguins, or hop on a jetboat for an exhilarating ride along the coast. As an added bonus, spring is also prime whale watching time, giving you another reason to spend time on the water.

To explore a different kind of wilderness, drive 40 minutes out of the city to Perth Hills where you’ll find beautiful walking tracks and tumbling waterfalls. Local favourites include Noble Falls, Sixty Foot Falls and Lesmurdie Falls, all of which are reachable via short hikes.

Back in the city, you can discover the great outdoors in Kings Park, which provides excellent walking tracks and picnic spots with spectacular views over the city. Springtime in the park is also enhanced by the Kings Park Festival, an event which fills the area with beautiful wildflowers and works of art. The collection of flowers in bloom is always incredible, thanks to the fact that Western Australia has the largest collection of them anywhere on Earth, even acting as the exclusive home to over 60% of wildflower species. To see more of them, head to the Avon Valley and Serpentine National Park, both of which are just over an hour outside the city centre.

If you’re looking for more active ways to enjoy the city and warmer weather, consider signing up for the MSWA Ocean Ride which takes riders along the coastline from Freemantle to Hillary’s. If the 100km route seems too much to tackle, shorter distances are also on offer with the 10km race designed for the whole family.

TheFremantle Festivaltakes over the beautiful beachside suburb every November, filling its streets with live music, roving performers, innovative theatre and an enticing array of street food. It’s the longest running street festival in Australia and the best part about it is all performances are free.

Finally, springtime in Perth wouldn’t be complete without embracing long lunches on sunny patios and sunset drinks on rooftop bars. Settle in for a leisurely brunch with ocean views on the deck at Bib and Tucker, snag a table at Cottesloe Beach Hotel’s breezy Beach Club for tapas and classic cocktails, or indulge in decadent fine dining in the airy indoor-outdoor courtyard at Post. Once the sun sets, our top pick for a drink under the stars is Bob’s Bar. It’s got a great energy, amazing view of the city and a neat little snack menu in case hunger strikes as the night goes on.

Breakfast after todays bike ride. Feeling thankful.
