Top 5 Places to Spend New Year’s Eve in Perth

It may be the last of Australia’s capital cities to welcome in the new year, but that doesn’t mean Perth does things by half. On the contrary, Perth amps up the wow factor on December 31st, allowing locals and visitors alike to party well into the wee hours. Here are our top picks for welcoming in 2019.

Perth’s biggest party is NYE on the Foreshore, a sprawling celebration offering everything from chilled riverside seating with delicious food and fancy cocktails to a giant festival stage pumping live music. There’s also a silent disco, acoustic stage and a host of roving performers for those seeking something in the middle of the two extremes. Thanks to its location on the banks of the Swan River, guests also enjoy front row seats to the city’s best fireworks display.

For something a little more intimate, pop along to one of Perth’s favourite small bars for the night’s celebrations. One of the great things about New Year’s in a small bar is you won’t have to compete with a cast of thousands for the bartender’s attention or plan your toilet trips half an hour in advance. Make a beeline to Varnish on King for their trademark whisky and bacon combos or head to Wolf Lane’s New Year’s Eve soiree, which comes complete with pulled pork rolls, cupcakes and one of the most well stocked bars in town.

For family fun, pack the kids and head to Rottnest Island for the night. Kicking things off at 4pm with performances, glow in the dark face painting, a pop up food village and silent disco, your biggest problem here might be finding the time to enjoy everything before the early fireworks display at 9pm. Everything mentioned above (with the exception of purchases at the food village) is free so once you’ve paid for the ferry over, make the most of it and get involved in everything the island has to offer.

Another safe bet for families or for those seeking a relaxed evening is a picnic in beautiful King’s Park. The grounds here are elevated and sprawling, making it easy to find a great vantage point to watch the fireworks light up the city skyline. You should be able to catch most of the major displays from here, including those being let off at the Crown, Claremount Showgrounds, and further down the river in East Fremantle.

If you're looking for something more intimate on New Year's Eve, book a room at Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough. Get yourself into your dressing gown (found in the cupboard in your room), pop open a bottle of bubbles, and watch the incredible sunset over the ocean - all from the comfort of your hotel room.
