Spoil Mum in Melbourne this Mother’s Day

On May 14 mums around the country will be putting their feet up and letting their kids treat them to something utterly lovely. If you’ve done the old bunch of flowers and box of chocolates combo one too many times, we’ve got some great ideas to help you mix it up.

Relax & Recharge

Most mums we know love a good spa day and Melbourne has plenty of options to please even the most discerning maternal figure. Onsen Ma is the city’s best traditional Japanese bathhouse, offering tranquil soaks and professional massages. For a broader range of treatments including facials and manicures, book mum in for an hour or two at Skin Day Spa in St Kilda or at the award-winning Miss Fox in the city.

Indulge her Sweet Tooth

If mum has a soft spot for chocolate, cake and ice-cream, consider one of these delectable venues for a Mother’s Day treat. Om Nom is Melbourne’s home of decadent, art-like desserts and is famous for its dessert degustation. Yep, you read that right – multiple courses of dessert to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Another excellent option is Bibelot where the only struggle you and mum will face is how to choose between the delicious delicacies filling the cabinet. If the choice proves too difficult, opt for the dessert platter which features nine of the café’s creations in miniature form.

Celebrate with Wine

Does your mum love vino? Great! Grab an Uber and take her to Noisy Ritual Urban Winery for the afternoon. The wine bar and cellar door will be open from 1pm, offering tastings and wine by the glass alongside great live music. If this all sounds a little too modern for ma, book a table at City Wine Shop, a delightfully traditional wine bar at the top end of the city. You and mum can enjoy everything from boutique local drops to big European blends, both of which go down mighty fine with one of the specialty cheese boards and a serve of the house terrine.

Get Artsy

Catch an old school movie in one of the grand rooms at Astor Theatre. There are a couple on offer this Mother’s Day but we think you’d be silly to go past timeless classic Gone with the Wind. If mum is a musical theatre buff, she might enjoy Julie Andrews’ production of My Fair Lady at Regent Theatre. Or, if her humour’s a little more risqué, use Mother’s Day as the perfect excuse to finally go and see The Book of Mormon.

Luxuriate in a Long Lunch

The best kind of Sunday meals are relaxed brunches and leisurely long lunches. It’s no secret that taking mum out for brunch is a very popular option on Mother’s Day and because venues don’t usually take brunch bookings, this option leaves you running the risk of getting hangry while you wait for a table. Try the decadent high tea option at Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne with bottomless sparkling wine, a Lindt chocolate fountain, pastriesand more. Book at table at trusty Italian institution Café Di Stasio, secure a seat at sleek foodie favourite Cumulus, or for something different line up a sumptuous Indian feast at Mukka on Brunswick Street.
