Spring Events in Melbourne

It’s time to hang up your coats and put the heater away – spring is almost here and Melbourne’s ready to play.

Start the season right with a visit to The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture. Exclusive to Melbourne, this exhibition boasts more than 140 garments designed by the prestigious French fashion house over its 70 year history. Get up close and personal with iconic creations from Dior’s biggest names, including Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Raf Simons and of course the brand’s namesake, Christian Dior.

Another event on our fashion radar is the fabulous Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Featuring the best names in Australian fashion – from high end labels like Thurley and Romance Was Born to the more accessible, like Aquila and C/MEO – and a swathe of stylish events, this is the perfect way to get excited for your spring wardrobe.

If you want an example of how well Melbourne does the arts, look no further than Melbourne Festival. Running from October 4 – 22, the festival will be serving up incredible performances across a multitude of mediums, including music, dance, theatre and visual arts.

Melbourne Fringe Festival is also a shining example of creativity, putting thousands of performers in all corners of the city for one glorious fortnight in September. Expect the weird and the wonderful.

If all our suggestions so far feel a bit too arty for you, you might be pleased to know spring is also the time of year for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Catch the coach from Federation Square for a day of world class racing on beautiful Phillip Island.

AFL Grand Final Day is another big one for sporting fans and will kick off this year on September 30. Wear your colours, grab your family and friends and get ready for fierce competition and rowdy crowds. If you miss out on a ticket, take yourself to one of the city’s sports bars to soak up the atmosphere.

If you’d rather compete than spectate, why not sign yourself up for the Melbourne Marathon? It celebrates its 40th birthday this year and is set to be bigger and better than ever. If you want to be involved but 42 kilometres is too much, consider one of the shorter routes. There’s even a 3 kilometre walk, perfect for those with kids in tow.

Don’t worry foodie folk – we haven’t forgotten you. Mould: A Cheese Festival is coming to town in September and holey cheeses it sounds amazing! The focus is Australia’s best producers of the good stuff and attendees will have 80 different cheeses to work their way through. Wine will also be readily available.

Speaking of, Pinot Palooza is also setting up shop this spring, bringing all the best bottles of this fine red wine to one place. Some of the big names already confirmed include Henschke, Spring Vale and Cloudy Bay.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is the city’s most iconic event and the best excuse we know to enjoy a Tuesday off work. Don your Sunday best, buy some bubbly and put yourself trackside at the race that stops a nation.
