Averaging 265 sunny days per year, Perth has no shortage of Vitamin D to dish out to anyone who finds themselves within its city limits. With the mercury rising as we head towards the summer months, now is the perfect time to up your intake and move all your activities outdoors, including eating and drinking.

All good days start with a great breakfast and there’s no better place to chow down than Miss Watson’s Garden. Part of the Angrove Street Collective in North Perth, this is the perfect place to come on a sunny day. The beautiful courtyard, quality coffee and fresh menu provide all sorts of nourishment for the early hours and, after you’re done, you can explore the collective at leisure. There’s always something going on in this creative space, with workshops spanning topics from interior design to starting your own market stall. There are also plenty of locally crafted goodies to buy and you might just come away with some new décor for your home, a new addition to your wardrobe or a lovely bunch of flowers.

As we move through the day into brunch territory, it really is hard to go past Bib and Tucker. Owned by former Olympian Eamon Sullivan, this North Freemantle beachside gem has everything going for it: spectacular views, friendly service and delicious grub. Did we mention the buttermilk and banana pancakes with salted caramel, pecan and Tasmanian double cream? Or the huevos rancheros with fried eggs, tortillas, smashed beans, avo, feta, chorizo and chipotle salsa? Honestly, take a friend and share both. You will reach new heights of gastronomic glory. This little gem is also fully licensed so if you find brunch rolling long into the afternoon, they’ve got you covered. A word of warning - the secret is well and truly out about this place so make sure you head there early or you will be waiting in line for a while.


The Shorehouse over in Swanbourne is another epic beachside find, serving up casual vibes with knock-out food. The menu has a Mediterranean twist and dishes are always plated to perfection. Drinks wise, The Shorehouse specialises in Bloody Marys, offering five distinct varieties of increasing bite. The fifth includes horseradish, chilli and mustard: luckily you have those ocean views to cool you down.

When it comes to outdoor bars in Perth, rooftops are king, with more and more opening up throughout the city. The pick of the bunch is the Mechanic’s Institute, loved by all for what must be the city’s friendliest bartenders, best 90s playlist and most pleasing drinks menu around. The Epic Bloody Mary, pictured below, even comes garnished with a cheeseburger. Enough said.


Bob’s Bar is also worth a visit. Located atop Print Hall, just a short walk away from the Mechanic’s Institute, you arrive on the rooftop via two sets of newspaper lined stairs. The bar is named after Bob Hawke, one of Australia’s former Prime Ministers and, coincidentally, also the man who holds one of the country’s most famous drinking records, having downed 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Craft beer flows freely here at Bob’s, along with an extensive selection of mostly organic wines. The food’s pretty decent too and a bowl of crunchy pork crackling will satisfy almost any hungry belly.

If you’re after something a little more intimate and perhaps a little more refined, send yourself off to the Sherry on the top floor of The Flour Factory. True to its name, this small rooftop bar specialises in fortified wine, serving it up both unadorned and in surprisingly refreshing cocktails. Gin is also a focal point here, with more than 90 varieties to choose from.

Wherever you find yourself in Perth, it’s safe to say that a great outdoor setting is never far away.
