It’s hard to pick the best aspect of Brisbane’s Gambaro Hotel. Is it the restaurants - Gambaro Seafood and Black Hide Steakhouse – which have won more awards than we can count? Or is it the stellar location on Caxton Street in Petrie Terrace, an area known and loved for its boutique shopping, cafes and after-dark entertainment? Maybe it’s the sense of style and luxury that hits you as soon as you walk into the richly marbled lobby and stays with you in the thoughtful details of your room? Look, in all honesty, it’s too hard to choose. The point is Gambaro Hotel is a wonderful place to find yourself, regardless of what drew you there. The attractions in and around the hotel make it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway. You won’t need a car, bus ticket or taxi funds: just your own two feet and a good appetite. Here’s the itinerary to the perfect weekend escape:
After checking yourself in, admiring your room, taking in the view from your balcony and testing out the oversized rain shower, make your way next door to Gambaro Seafood Restaurant. It’s the most awarded seafood restaurant in Queensland so, no matter what you choose, you’re in for a treat.
Treat yourself to a sneaky nightcap at MG Bar, a slick venue boasting Brisbane’s most extensive beverage list. Enjoy an espresso martini, a glass of boutique tawny or opt for a traditional Scottish whiskey.
After a great night’s sleep in the plush king-size bed, pop out to your balcony to check the weather. It’s Brisbane so chances are it’s sunny and warm: perfect. Make your way up Caxton Street and settle down for brunch at Anouk Café, one of Brisbane’s favourites. The menu’s adventurous here so branch out from your usual morning fare and try the five spice breakfast mince or French toast pancakes. You won’t regret it.
It’s time for a spot of shopping. There are a great range of boutiques to discover along Given Terrace, from favourite brands like Witchery to one offs like Petrol Boutique and Olive Home. There’s also a great selection for vintage lovers, including quirky Retro Metro and Paddington Antique Centre, which sits further along on Latrobe Terrace.
It’s lunchtime at Kettle and Tin. Opt for something hearty, like the pulled pork sandwich, or their chicken and waffles speciality. The drinks here are also delicious so feel free to linger over a ‘Figjam’ – a refreshing concoction of Hendricks, esprit des figues, triple sec, marmalade and lime.
Make your way up to the Paddington Barracks and spend the afternoon enjoying a movie or a spot of pampering. Jimmy Rod’s Barber Shop knows how to take care of the lads and Brooklyn Beauty Bar expertly caters to the ladies.
After another stint in your oversized rain shower, send yourself to whatever’s on at nearby Suncorp Stadium. It might be rugby, soccer or a big name musician – Check out the Suncorp Stadium website to see what’s coming up. Some events don’t start until around 7:30 so, if that’s the case, enjoy a pre-drink at Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall, a luxe, old-world bar right next to Gambaro Hotel.
It’s time to eat again and there’s no better place to spend the last night of your getaway than Black Hide Steakhouse, located quite literally across the road from the hotel. Enjoy Australia’s best steak, an excellent selection of sides and a nice full-bodied red.
Make the most of your beautiful room by staying in it until check-out. Order a coffee through room service and sip it alongside the morning paper. Once you’ve left your room, feel free to leave your luggage at reception so you can enjoy one last meal in the area hassle free. Grab something deliciously healthy from the wonderfully named Atticus Finch or indulge your sweet tooth with one of the offerings at Café Bema. It's the perfect end to the perfect weekend escape.
