Top 10 Things to Do in Hobart this Autumn

Hobart is quickly making a name for itself as the art capital of Australia and one quick look at the city’s social calendar for the next few months shows why. There’s lots of other stuff to look forward to as well, from foodie festivals to comedy and red wine appreciation. You’d best book your flights.

1. Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow

Yes, you read right! Australia’s biggest comedy festival is setting up stumps in Hobart for one weekend only, bringing five of its top performers. Get ready for razor-sharp wit and laugh out loud moments.

April 28 & 29. Buy tickets here.

2. Tasmanian Red Wine Weekend

Love a glass of red on a chilly autumn’s day? Then make a beeline to Tasmania’s red wine weekend where the state’s producers will showcase their best drops. You’ll even get a Plumm wine glass to take home.

May 20 & 21. Tickets at the door.

3. Dark Mofo

Hobart’s most celebrated arts festival is back for its fifth year running. Vast, immersive and deliciously disorienting, the festival is the brain child of the man behind MONA, David Walsh. While this year’s program is yet to be released, a couple of hallmark events have been confirmed, such as the Nude Solstice Swim (one for the brave!) and the Winter Feast – a gothic dinner party of epic proportions.

4. Ten Days on the Island

Tasmania’s only state-wide arts festival offers a bumper program this year with an eclectic and joyful mix of theatre, music, comedy and visual art filling the schedule. You can catch exuberant performances from Indigenous dance group Djuki Mala, a collection of wonderfully zany photographs taken aboard a scientific research vessel, and a production devoted entirely to the acoustic life of sheds.

March 17 – 26. Check out the full program here.

5. Spiegeltent

Australia’s most loved travelling tent is back in town. This year’s headliner is Velvet – a critically acclaimed cabaret with a focus on disco. Other enticing options include funny men Tommy Little and Luke McGregor, mind-blowing singer Archie Roach, and Mother’s Ruin, a thoroughly enjoyable cabaret about gin.

March 9 – April 1. Buy tickets here.

6. Newkind Festival

This festival asks us to think about what society might look like if we had to start all over again. Taking the form of a four-day boot camp in the Tasmanian wilderness, participants are invited to reinvent reality from the ground up, tackling the big questions about humankind along the way. It’s immersive, ambitious and no doubt an excellent breeding ground for ideas.

March 17 – 20. Buy tickets here.

7. EΣTIA Greek Festival

Spend a day eating souvlaki and dancing the Zorba in the sunshine at this amazing street festival. If you’re lucky, you might even get to smash a few plates in true Greek style.

March 19, 10am to 5pm.

8. Hobart Blues & BBQ Festival

Showcasing only the best beers, BBQ meats and blues, this first-time festival is bound to be a crowd pleaser. If you fancy yourself as someone who’s skilled with the hotplate you can even register for the BBQ comp. As well as bragging rights, creators of the best brisket, ribs, chicken and lamb will take home more than $3500 in cash and prizes.

March 25 – 26. Register your team here.

9. Art Farm Birchs Bay Sculpture Trail

A scenic 45 minute drive south of Hobart will take you to the start of this 30 piece sculpture trail. If the artwork isn’t enough to entice, the natural scenery should do the trick, with the path taking you through pear orchards and open fields and also giving you beautiful views of Bruny Island.

April 14 – July 31.

10. Festival of Voices

Hobart comes alive with the sound of song again this winter with concert halls, theatres and public spaces playing host to some of the country’s best voices. If you want to test out your own lungs, head along to the Bonfire and Big Sing and get involved.

June 30 – July 16.
