6 Things You May Not Know About Melbourne

mage: Quincy Hotel Melbourne

Melbourne – it’s the home of the MCG. It’s been voted the most livable city more times than you can shake a stick at, and its home to a variety of incredible hotel properties including the brand New Vibe Hotel Melbourne, Adina Melbourne Southbank, Adina West Melbourne and the soon-to-be-open Quincy Hotel Melbourne.

And whilst you think you might know this city… think again! we’ve gone undercover to give you the top six tips from six tip top locals.

You don’t need a car…honestly, you don’t!

Getting around Melbourne is easy and one of many reasons Victoria’s capital has consistently ranked as one of the world's top three most liveable cities since 2002. No matter the direction you are heading, you will find a train, tram, bus, bike path, walking trail, or ride-share to take you there. Of course, nothing beats a stroll through this cosmopolitan city, but if your “boots weren’t made for walking”, you can always take full advantage of the unlimited free tram rides within Melbourne’s CBD. For all other public transport trips in Melbourne, pick yourself up a Myki card.

South Melbourne Market Dim Sims are a Must!

"South Melbourne Market Dim Sim’s are the best dim sims you’ll ever try," said every Melburnian ever.

For more than 60 years, the Cheng family’s secret recipe has wowed market goers and transformed their humble take-away storefront into a true Melbourne icon. At twice the size – and twice the flavour - South Melbourne Market Dim Sims are anything but your average fish ‘n’ chip shop fare, and will convert even the most devout ‘dimmy’ sceptic.

Where for ‘Art’ Thou, Creative Types?

Melbourne is renowned as having some of the best street art in the world with local and international artists scramble for the opportunity to ‘make their mark’ on the city’s eclectic and vibrant laneways. The self-guided Melbourne City Street Art and Graffiti Tour is great way to ensure you see all of the best works, including the acclaimed Hosier Lane.

Located in the heart of the CBD, the brand new Vibe Hotel Melbourne is also within Every striking distance of the city’s famed laneways and historic arcades, and thanks to its dual frontage provides unobstructed views of the Yarra River and city.

Every Month is GINuary

The Melbourne Gin Palace was shut down in 1870 for being in a filthy and disgusting condition. Fast forward 150 years where gin is the alcoholic flavour of the month and the only thing disgusting about this establishment is that its delightfully decadent cocktails leave you wanting more.

There’s no doubt, Melbourne’s iconic Gin Palace will transport you back to the roaring 20s with a mixture of velvet, plush furniture, and sultry tunes - not to mention one of the most extensive gin menus you will find. If an underground jazz vibe is your scene or you just like juniper, you’ve come to the right spot.

Insider's Tip: The Gin Palace has a ‘Cocktails at Home’ service and promises FREE same day delivery in the CBD if ordered before 3pm Monday – Saturday. Don’t go past the Wet and Dirty Martini or the Triple Tipple.

Charcoal Lane is More Than Just a Pretty Menu

Charcoal Lane is a social enterprise restaurant providing young Aboriginal people with the opportunity to learn new skills under the guidance of celebrated executive chef Greg Hampton. The team is passionate about native, seasonal ingredients, and redefine the view of modern Australian cuisine.

The menu is seasonally driven and, right now as we head into autumn, our pick si the 12-hour slow cooked wallaby shank with truffle mash or their delish macadamia and lavender semi freddo with quandong and molten dark chocolate. Yum!

It’s so good even Royalty dine here. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited back in 2018 and joined a ‘touch, taste, smell’ hands-on experience using native ingredients.

A Quirky New Hotel is About to Make a Big Entrance

Another hidden secret that’s about to burst onto the scene in full technicolour is Quincy Hotel Melbourne in its Australian debut. Chef Adam Woodfield is perfecting a menu bursting with South East Asian flavours and Hotel GM Christian Price is putting his team through the paces to ensure your stay is colourful and memorable and their Instagram page is epic. So, what are you waiting for?
