Make the Most of Spring in Perth

Lovely sunny days, warmer ocean temperatures and a bunch of wonderful outdoor dining options make Perth an ideal choice for spring getaways. Pack your beach gear, download a summer playlist and get ready to enjoy Australia’s west coast at its best.

One of Perth’s biggest drawcards is the azure blue Indian Ocean which laps against the coast on the city’s western edge. Make the most of it and learn to surf at Scarborough Beach Surf School, try your hand at kiteboarding, jump aboard a kayak to get up close and personal with sea lions and fairy penguins, or hop on a jetboat for an exhilarating ride along the coast. As a bonus, spring is also prime whale watching time, giving you another reason to spend time on the water.

To explore a different kind of wilderness, drive 40 minutes out of the city to Perth Hills where you’ll find beautiful walking tracks and tumbling waterfalls. Local favourites include Noble Falls, Sixty Foot Falls and Lesmurdie Falls, all of which are reachable via short hikes.

Back in the city, you can discover the great outdoors in Kings Park, which provides excellent walking tracks and picnic spots with spectacular views over the city. The Kings Park Festival, one of Australia’s longest running festivals, is held in spring, filling the area with beautiful wildflowers and works of art.

The collection of flowers in bloom is always incredible, as the park is home to more than 3,000 wildflower species.  Western Australia has the largest collection of wildflowers anywhere on Earth, with 60 percent of the flowering species found nowhere else on the planet. To see more of them, head to the Avon Valley and Serpentine National Park, both of which are just over an hour outside the city centre.

If you’re looking for more active ways to enjoy the city and warmer weather, consider signing up for the MSWA Ocean Ride which takes cyclists along the coastline from Scarborough to Hillarys, raising money for charity. If the 140km Epic Challenge seems too much to tackle, there’s a range of shorter rides on offer including a 10km ride designed for the whole family.

Every second year in spring, the Fremantle Biennale showcases an amazing array of projections, optical illusions, and other site-responsive contemporary art in public spaces around Freo, created by established and emerging artists.

Finally, springtime in Perth wouldn’t be complete without embracing long lunches on sunny patios and sunset drinks on rooftop bars. Settle in for a leisurely brunch with ocean views at Straits Café, Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough’s signature restaurant, or indulge in cocktails at The Aviary, Perth’s iconic open air rooftop bar.

Once the sun sets, our top pick for a drink under the stars is the one-hatted Storehouse Subiaco, the jewel in the crown of Vibe Hotel Subiaco Perth. With knockout views and a great buzz, it has great dining and snack menus in case hunger strikes as the night goes on..
