Winter in the Yarra Valley

The beautiful Yarra Valley sits on Melbourne’s doorstep, bursting with nature trails, spectacular landscapes and charming cellar doors, all waiting to be discovered. Here are the region’s best winter activities.

1. Hit the slopes at Lake Mountain

Thought Thredbo and Perisher were your only options for skiing here in Australia? Think again. Lake Mountain, located an easy two hour drive from Melbourne, has a snow season that runs from June to September. While the location is best known for its cross country skiing it also offers gentle slopes for first timers and tobogganing and snow play for the little ones.

2. Sample the vino at Buxton Ridge

Sitting just outside of the picturesque town of Marysville, Buxton Ridge is a family owned, award winning winery with a great range. Handily, they also have an open fireplace at their cellar door, providing the ideal setting for winter wines. Dominique Portet and Oakridge are also well worth a visit, as is Yarra Valley Dairy where you can sample wines from 30 small local producers while you make your way through the dairy’s delicious cheeses.

3. See Steavenson Falls in full flow

Winter is the best time of year to check out these spectacular falls, thanks to higher average rainfall over the colder months. Plummeting 84 metres, they’re one of the biggest in the state and easily accessible via a 700 metre walk from the nearby carpark.

4. Take high tea at Coombe

Finger sandwiches, pastries, scones and cakes, all washed down with a glass of bubbles and a warm cup of tea: the perfect way to spend a chilly afternoon.

5. Catch your dinner at Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm

Rug up and roll in to this fisherman’s paradise just outside of Marysville. Once you’ve made your catch, the staff can clean, gut and fillet it. While you can cook it up then and there on one of the farm’s BBQs, when the weather’s chilly we recommend heading 500 metres up the road to local pub The Buxton Hotel where they’ll do the cooking for you, serving it up with a hearty helping of chips and salad.
